Top Machinery Companies in Singapore

Overview

Government regulators ensure maintenance, repair and replacement services of equipment used to manufacture resources

Securing its reputation within the South-East Asian region as having one of the world’s most advanced economies, Singapore’s economy is invigorated by the country’s exports in electronics manufacturing and machinery, tourism, financial services and for maintaining the world’s busiest cargo seaport. In 2022, it was noted that the main industry is the manufacturing sector, which is the largest contributor of 20%-25% of the domestic economy’s gross domestic product. Hence, the process of manufacturing machinery is a significant contributor to this sector.

Today, the Singapore government maintains this reputation by staying ahead of the game, directing the manufacturing industry towards implementing advanced technologies such as robotics, the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), smart sensors and 3D printing.

The Energy Market Authority (EMA) statutory board under the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) is responsible for maintaining a reliable and secure energy supply within Singapore. EMA, being the Power System Operator (PSO), ensures a reliable supply of electricity for consumers, and its Power System Control Centre (PSCC) is the nerve centre of the electricity transmission and generation system. At power stations, the electricity transmission system and generators are managed by PSCC system operators who deliver round-the-clock system security.

Being inter-connected to power systems, the natural gas transmission system operations are also managed by EMA. To ensure no incidents such as voltage dips occur, the maintenance of equipment is upheld while collaborations with earthwork contractors guarantee the prevention of damaging electricity cables and breaking up the power supply.

Organisations and government maintenance and repair accreditation schemes keep industries aligned in their contributions to a sustainably advanced economy

Within Singapore’s industries, maintenance and repairs of machinery and equipment are carried out according to accreditation schemes set by government statutory bodies. The Singapore Manufacturing Federation (SMF), is one of Singapore’s largest organisations that represents the operations pertaining to manufacturing and manufacturing-related multinational corporations (MNCs), small and medium enterprises, and affiliate members of industries. It offers a range of services including digital transformation services through technologies and smart manufacturing.

Managed by Enterprise Singapore (ESG), the Singapore Accreditation Council (SAC), conducts and promotes accreditation schemes and registration programmes for diverse industries. These accreditations include certifications provided to conformity assessment bodies (CABs) for testing, inspection and certification of construction materials; ICT quality management system certifications; Medical Device - Quality Management System certifications; and maintenance and overhaul inspection of air receivers, storage tanks, power boilers and pressure relief valves done by inspection bodies (IBs).

For the maintenance of Singapore’s aviation sector, the SAC provides the AS9100 certification, a quality management system standard for all aviation component suppliers of aerospace parts or components, while the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) is the Ministry of Transport’s (MOT) government statutory board and regulator for all maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) companies. MRO companies provide services to the owners and operators of Singapore-registered aircraft according to the Singapore Airworthiness Requirements Part 145 (SAR-145) - maintenance organisation approval.

Key Trends

Technology remains an advantage in combating the aftermath of COVID-19 pandemic and shortage of resources within the industry

A country of diverse industries that makes use of a plethora of innovations and resources, Singapore’s economic growth is driven forth by first-class machinery powered by advanced technologies. The National AI Strategy initiative involving AI, data analytics and sensors was launched to combat the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic within the healthcare, security, smart estates, education and logistics sectors.

In 2020, robots such as the robot dog - Spot - were invented to patrol parks and monitor park goers. GovTech upgraded Spot with additional features such as remote control, 3D mapping and semi-autonomous operations. Similarly, O-R3, an outdoor security robot, developed by OTSAW, features a 360-degree camera and sensors for processing and recording data for Public Utilities Board (PUB) officers in reservoirs.

Singapore’s healthcare system is recognised as one of the best systems worldwide for providing the most advanced healthcare services. Pharmaceutical and biomedical giants such as GlaxoSmithKline, Novartis and Pfizer are not only drivers of economic growth but are known for their manufacturing facilities. In 2022, it was noted that Singapore’s medical device market value reached USD 1.3 billion.

Meanwhile, to combat the global chip shortage of semiconductors, found inside smartphones and computers, South Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT and Nanyang Technological University (NTU Singapore) manage the Korea Institute of Machinery & Materials (KIMM), whose scientists developed a chemical-free printing technique in building an extremely uniform and adaptable semiconductor wafer chip that provided better yield and efficiency.

Although nanotransfer-based printing is a promising technology for producing uniform wafers and uses a polymer mould to print metal onto a substrate, the technique uses a chemical adhesive layer that causes side effects. KIMM’s chemical-free technique combined with a metal-assisted chemical etching produced semiconductor wafers with nanowires.

Evonik Singapore’s innovation hub and Asiga, a DLP 3D printing company, also collaborated to launch a series of INFINAM photopolymer resins using Asiga’s additive manufacturing innovation and Evonik’s industrial-grade 3D printing hardware.

Additionally, in 2022, it was reported that Singapore’s construction equipment market capacity will rise up to USD 444.2 million by 2031. Companies such as Hitachi and Komatsu will cater to the demand for large excavators. As of today, construction equipment utilises intelligent systems driven by IoT and data analysis for service, networking and sustainability.

Additive manufacturing and other technologies adopted for producing cleaner products and delivering a greener economy

In 2022, according to Data Bridge Market Research’s international Metal Fabrication Market research report, the Asia-Pacific region dominates the metal fabrication market due to China and India’s comprehensive research and development.

A sudden rise in the use of additive manufacturing amongst various industries was noted and can also be applied to metal repair parts as it involves a different process to 3D printing processes. Metal additive manufacturing is a process of transforming metal into powder through heating methods. GE Aviation Engine Services Singapore’s (GE AESS) Loyang site facility is the first worldwide maintenance, repair and overhaul facility to gain approval for the use of metal additive manufacturing for commercial jet engine repairs.

In 2021, it was noted that to support the country’s initiatives towards self-sufficiency, the Singapore government invented an advanced system for treating sewage involving a network of high-tech plants and tunnels. At the core of the system is the high-tech Changi Water Reclamation Plant, where part of the facility lies underground, and comprises a maze of steel pipes, filtration systems, tubes, tanks and other machinery, to treat up to 900 million litres of wastewater.

Notably, South-East Asia’s recycled polyvinyl chloride market is expected to grow upto USD 563.15 million by 2030. To adapt to a green economy in Singapore, the consumption of plastic can be reduced through recycled polyvinyl initiatives taken. In 2018, to deliver a sustainable manufacturing future, DB Schenker’s Upcycling Hub by Airlab SUTD was established, a facility designed using recycled plastic waste with the help of 3D printing technologies, additive manufacturing and digital design technologies. An ABB robotic arm and extruder were used for the fabrication process in assembling the Gathering Chandelier of the facility with 441 pounds of recycled PET pellets. In 2022, Singapore was noted for having the largest recycled polyvinyl chloride market within the region.

A greener approach to fashion: textile and apparel market community unite to provide a sustainable future

To support the Singapore Green Plan 2030, the textile and apparel markets are undergoing a radical change. For textile waste recycling, according to the National Environment Agency, in 2022, textile and fashion products were held accountable for 137,000 tonnes of waste of which only 4% is recycled.

According to a report by Accenture and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), consumers in Singapore are interested in supporting a circular economy, which maintains sustainability and longevity in textile products. Several local fashion brands such as Love, Bonito have already begun implementing this. In 2022, the Textile and Fashion Federation (TaFF) of Singapore launched a fashion sustainability programme to advocate and promote sustainable methods, enhance capabilities, and support research and innovation.

The RGE-NTU Sustainable Textile Research Centre is a partnership and facility for recycling of waste textiles materials by NTU and Royal Golden Eagle (RGE). The centre will undertake many functions including the automated sorting of textile waste based on fibre composition, through an integration of advanced spectroscopic techniques and machine learning capabilities. An automated system is also provided for removal of accessories such as zips or buttons.

Additionally in 2022, to support decarbonisation and conserve water, NTX - a textile tech solutions company - launched NTX Cooltrans, a waterless colouration technology. Unlike any other technology, the process does not involve the use of hot temperature dye baths to dye textiles, eliminating the need for dangerous chemicals.

Government agency partnerships and initiatives support agri-food industry’s indoor farming boom and complement Singapore Green Plan 2030

In 2022, Agri-Food Tech Expo Asia (AFTEA) was inaugurated as Singapore’s first exhibition platform for the most up-and-coming and established agri-food industry players to showcase and test their innovations and solutions being used. AFTEA promoted the launch of many agritech solutions such as urban/smart farming, be it smart micro farms by Mustard Seed Ventures or Urban Farming Partners - Singapore’s first advanced indoor vertical farming facility that uses Dutch horticulture technologies.

To address the demand for high-quality superior tasting produce, precision agriculture firm Singrow’s Smart Farm uses tech commonly known as the Fast Cultivation Method to deliver shorter harvesting cycles and better climate-resilient crops. In addition to this, Commonwealth Greens, managed by Archisen, an agri-tech firm, is one of the highest-yielding indoor farms in the country. It provides high-yield, fast growth and nutritious produce with the assistance of vertical systems, powered by a smart cockpit that is heavily reliant on IoT technology, data analytics and sensors.

Singaporean citizens are recognised for their love of food and therefore, the country’s food manufacturing industry comprises over 1,000 companies. In 2022, FoodPlant, a joint venture between the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT), ESG and JTC, was launched. This facility focuses on boosting innovation within the food and beverage market. It comprises nine rooms containing specific food production equipment for various processes including general processing, thermal processing, filling and packing, and others.

To support the Singapore Green Plan 2030, the Singapore Food Agency’s (SFA) ‘30 by 30’ initiative and funding initiatives for indoor farms were launched to boost the agri-food industry’s capabilities. To avoid land and resource obstacles, farmers resorted to technology and innovative methods to deliver increased productivity in crops. Currently, farms use methods such as multi-storey LED lighting and recirculating aquaculture systems resulting in a better produce of approximately 10 to 15 times more than traditional farming.
