Singapore’s marketing and advertising industry spend shifting from traditional to digital media

Singapore’s marketing industry consists of services including advertising, branding, marketing and public relations. The advertising industry comprises revenue generated by agencies providing advertising services, including both online and traditional advertising services. The advertising industry contributed less than 1% to total services industry revenue in Singapore in 2020, while recording around SGD 3 billion in revenues in 2020, with around 1,550 entities in operation.

The industry has been shifting from television advertising to digital marketing whereby television accounted for around 30% of the total ad spend, followed by digital media accounting for around 28% in 2018. Prior to COVID-19, the value of television advertising (estimated at around USD 500 million in 2018) was forecasted to decline from 2019 onwards, and recorded a 3% YoY decline in 2019. Singapore was estimated to be the weakest advertising revenue market in Asia-Pacific in 2019. All media types in Singapore experienced a decline in ad spend in 2018, except for digital media, which saw a positive growth of around 13% YoY.

The Association of Advertising and Marketing Singapore (AAMS) is the industry association representing all marketing and advertising entities in the country. But the shift among retail companies from operating with 80% in-store sales and 20% online to accelerating online sales to cope with COVID-19 has led to the change in customer touch points from physical to digital. Further, consumers were found to be spending more time at home during the pandemic and were naturally consuming more online content.
