Overview
Official bodies regulate the engineering sector; number of professionals in the mechanical engineering industry on the rise
The Professional Engineers Board (PEB) in Singapore enables all segments of the engineering sector to operate in a progressive manner. This includes the overlooking of mechanical engineers and the industry within it. Mechanical engineers are required to register with the PEB in order to obtain licensing for practices within engineering corporations.
In 2020, the PEB newly registered 19 professional engineers, which showed an increase since 2016, when it registered only 13. By December 2020, the percentage of mechanical engineers who were registered increased to 22.5%, while the percentage of practitioners present within the mechanical engineering field increased to 55.6%.
Advancement in mechanical engineering sector driven by integration into various industries, offering wider scope in engineering field
With mechanical engineering being the broadest engineering discipline, job opportunities can vary from sectors that focus on solely mechanical aspects to sectors that involve mechanical engineering as an integral part of the process but not the primary segment of their work.
Mechanical engineering can be integrated into industries such as aerospace, construction, robotics, artificial intelligence and automotive. The industry as a whole is expected to show an 8.8% growth between 2016 and 2026 in the job market pool.
Within the sector, organisations seek individuals with the following skill set:
Designing superstructures, hulls and propulsion systems for ships, mechanical plants and equipment required for the utilisation of energy.
Designing of airframes, undercarriages and other equipment required for aircraft.
Designing of steam, internal combustion and non-electric motors and engines that can be used for railway locomotives, aircraft and road vehicles.
Creating machinery and tools that are necessary for mining, construction, agricultural and manufacturing sectors.
Establishing control standards and the functioning and safety of machinery, tools, motors and engines.
Compliance with design specifications and safety standards with regards to equipment, operations and maintenance.
Key Trends
Energy efficiency solutions remain a priority in Singapore
Improving the energy efficiency of district cooling systems, a new invention was tested and trials carried out in 2021 by Keppel Infrastructure’s district cooling plants in Singapore. Having received SGD 15 million in grants as a part of the Energy Resilience Grant Call, the trials stated that the energy carrying capacity could be improved by three times compared to using a conventional chilled water storage system method. This would also enable 10% cost savings for companies using such systems. Moreover, this thermal energy storage technology controls a new phase-change material that can be stored and has the capability to release cold energy at a gradual pace. This would enable cooling peak loads in commercial buildings.
Designed and developed by the Mechanical Engineering department of the National University of Singapore (NUS), the team also provided a lab-based cold energy recovery system that releases cold energy, which is released as a byproduct of the production of natural gas. The initiative serves as a means to address Keppel’s ‘Vision 2030’, which would assist with solutions to address Singapore’s cooling needs and enable energy efficiency.
Mechanical engineers look into offering sustainable solutions; rubber tyres being upcycled to promote wider usage of spare tyres
Researchers from the mechanical engineering team of NUS have completed the conversion of waste rubber tyres into light aerogels, which demonstrate remarkable properties such as increasing absorbency, being lightweight, greater efficiency in trapping heat and sound, and extreme durability. The exploration of eco-friendly solutions with the use of rubber materials has been a means of addressing the ‘reduce and recycle’ concept in the mechanical engineering field.
Utilising recycled car tyre fibres, the aerogels contain many properties that can be used for applications. Some of these properties include having excellent heat insulation, being highly porous, lighter and stiffer than commercial foam, increased sound absorption and being water repellant when coated with methoxytrimethylsilane. The team is focused on manufacturing large-scale aerogels and partnering with industrial businesses to commercialise and scale up the novel concept.
Mechanical engineering sector aids healthcare industry; robotics enables assistance with frailty in patients
A School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering professor, Ang Wei Tech, has introduced a wearable robot that could aid ailing patients. Working alongside Tan Tock Seng Hospital in Singapore, the Mobile Robotic Balance Assistant (MRBA) helps individuals suffering from severe illnesses. With a 40% injury-related death rate in Singapore, especially with regards to elderly individuals, the robot has carried out clinical trials with fifty participants.
MRBA is made up of a wheeled battery-powered base that could be harnessed by it being worn around the user's hips. The robot uses a depth-sensing camera along with other senses that can detect and identify telltale movements and the sudden loss of balance by users. Patients suffering from ailments such as spinal cord injuries, brain injuries and strokes could benefit from the MRBA, which has the capacity to assist patients with walking, sitting and standing.
Safer options explored within the sector; augmented reality centre offered for mechanical engineering students
In 2021, Schneider Electric and The Predictive Maintenance Centre were enabling 800 mechanical engineering students to utilise augmented reality in order to monitor real-time machine readings from remote locations. The regular standard method entails manually inserting probes in order to obtain data whilst the machine works, and this has proven to be dangerous at times. The need for predictive maintenance is to track real-time performances of machines in order to regularly schedule maintenance sessions to minimise unexpected breakdowns.
Students are provided with special applications that can be installed on mobile devices that would allow the usage of augmented reality to assist with learning. The initiative will visually act as a guide for students with regards to numerous machinery and allow them to obtain information regarding it. The Augmented Operator Advisor from the Schneider Electric unit provides software that can collect data readings from a range of sensors and translate them into predictions on the health of particular machines being checked.
Key Statistics
- As of 2022, the average salary for mechanical engineers is SGD 48,000 per year, with entry-level positions offering a starting pay of SGD 39,000. More experienced professionals can make up to SGD 72,000.
