COVID-19 causes devastating impacts on hospitality, destination marketing, travel and live events
The pandemic has devastated both the supply and demand metrics of the MICE industry. The demand for hybrid and virtual events escalated, while businesses were reducing costs to accommodate difficult times. Further, business travel drastically reduced, affected by challenges in the form of travel restrictions, quarantining measures, and pre and post-travel COVID-19 testing requirements.
With over 90 hotels and MICE venues being converted into isolation facilities to accommodate over 488,000 patients/close contact cases, STB launched a Safe Business Events Framework in 2020 to assess and regulate all pilot events. Further, it worked in close liaison with SACEOS to support the SG SafeEvent Certification, an industry-led accreditation programme. In addition to this, new and innovative safety protocols were trialled at selected MICE pilot events to guide the way for the reopening of the industry.
Singapore to lead MICE industry confidently through innovative forms of fully virtual or hybrid events
Two Singaporean companies, known as Jublia (an event management platform) and GlobalSign.in (a Singapore-based event technology business), both found online solutions for their clients struggling to move from in-person events to virtual events. Jublia has developed solutions for fully virtual events as well as a platform for hybrid solutions for its customers as live events return to the ‘new normal.’
On the other hand, GlobalSign.in developed knowledge resources such as webinars, one-on-one sessions and online content that helped event professionals to support their clients inaugurate their digital events. Further, it educated its customers on virtual events, live video streaming and the management involved for both. The company has built a new product known as GEVME Live that enables the organisation to form its own distinguished ‘digital venue’. This product will work competently even as live events progress, as it is believed that the new normal will include a digitised component in live events in the future.
Demand for physical meetings further diminishes as convenience, value and safety gain precedence
COVID-19 has essentially changed the dynamics of the industry. Certain convention venues such as the Marina Bay Sands (MBS) Expo & Convention Centre have reacted to changes in the industry by investing in modern technology such as Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) and Extended Reality (XR), coupled with video-conferencing and live-streaming platforms that enable MICE participants to have engaging and interactive experiences from a remote location.
Digital transformation has never proved to be more compelling for the industry and its ecosystem than at present. The pandemic served as a strong reminder for the MICE industry to establish immunity to operational turmoil that can be caused through technology, international relations and climate change.
Though the need for physical meetings hasn’t diminished entirely, there is wide scope for hybrid MICE events to reach out to a diverse and larger global audience who may find future travel a challenge. Likewise, digitising will facilitate data analytics in real time, and produce detailed customer insights for MICE organisers, exhibitors and participants. This, in turn, will enhance transparency, productivity, security and personalisation.
SACEOS optimistic that industry will revert to pre-pandemic levels by 2023
The industry has learnt to be more resilient with its quick adoption of health and safety measures amidst the highly contagious Omicron variant. These quick measures have revamped Singapore to be an attractive destination for MICE. The increase in vaccination levels and the relaxation of borders has enabled Singapore to attract a considerable number of business and local attendees. Further, relaxed travel rules, easier testing, expanded vaccinated travel lanes and the progressive opening of airports have led to a more optimistic future for MICE in Singapore.
Events such as the food and beverage show of Food&HotelAsia, Singapore International Water Week (SIWW) 2022, Jewellery & Gem World, Cosmoprof Asia, Singapore FinTech Festival and Industrial Transformation Asia-Pacific are all expected to draw in a large number of physical attendees, which is set to expand the physical venue capacity.
