Overview
Increasing interest in sports and fitness owing to promotion by Singapore government
The Singapore fitness and sports industry covers a vast variety of activities and facilities. The industry experiences quite a number of fluctuations within all its sectors, with the majority of their most recent growth or decline being influenced by the global pandemic. In March 2022, the Singapore government announced a ‘Bring Sport Back’ plan, worth an investment of SGD 20 million, to promote more physical activity by encouraging community participation in physical activity and sports. Plans to renovate and repurpose spaces including underused spaces for various sports and outdoor gyms are also in progress. Additionally, a survey conducted among six South East Asian countries reported that only 38% of Singapore respondents invested in personal fitness in 2021, with 50% intending to spend more in 2022.
The fitness and sports industry generates revenue from gyms, gymnasiums, fitness centres, sport stadiums as well as professional and recreational sports. While gymnasiums recorded 2.9 million in attendance in 2019, this decreased to 1.96 million in 2020, most likely as a consequence of COVID-19. The following year, 2021, recorded an attendance of 1.97 million, which could indicate a slow but gradual increase, likely accelerated by current efforts of the government to promote sport and fitness. Sport Singapore (SportSG) also introduced several initiatives during the period of peak social distancing by organising virtual classes and activities that could be followed by those interested from the comfort of their homes.
Key Trends
Sports industry mildly affected by pandemic, but strong perseverance supports swift recovery
While the professional sports industry was also greatly affected by social distancing regulations, athletes still managed to maintain their routines and training via videos and coaches analysing performances virtually. The sports industry and athletes were well supported and kept alive by SportSG through events and charities.
Furthermore, despite a dip in revenue from USD 37.43 million in 2019 to USD 14.24 million in 2020, most likely owing to the fact that many events would have been cancelled rather than people not wanting to attend them, the sports event industry revenue made a swift recovery in 2021, generating an income of USD 32.04 million in 2021. It is expected to make USD 56.19 million in revenue 2022 and reach a projected market volume of USD 70.2 million by 2027.
Higher attendance at gyms post-pandemic; public has become more health-oriented and diligent in fitness
Surprisingly, gyms, fitness studios and other sports and fitness facilities have reported an increase in customers after regulations had been loosened, compared to the time before COVID-19. This can be attributed to the fact that people may have realised just how important staying healthy and fit is, while the long period of isolation may have pushed them to explore more activities outside their home.
SportSG also reported an increase in the number of bookings, while the number of users for its badminton and basketball courts as well as swimming pools has also increased.
Technological advances increase the presence of digital fitness: a necessary alternative following the global pandemic and social distancing protocols
Along with an increased reliance on technology, E-services and digital fitness are making a prominent appearance in the industry. E-services in the fitness industry in Singapore generated an income of USD 16.3 million in 2017 with a steady increase of at least USD 2.5 million until 2019. They made a huge leap in revenue from USD 21.3 million in 2019 to USD 28.8 million in 2020, most likely due to the pandemic. E-services are projected to generate revenue of USD 31.4 million by 2024.
Moreover, the Singapore digital fitness and well-being market experienced a revenue growth of about 24.7% in 2021, and this growth is expected to continue, resting at 9.2% by 2025. The use of digital fitness apps has also steadily increased over the years with a steep revenue climb from USD 27.61 million in 2019 to USD 45.22 in 2020, once again most likely owing to COVID-19. The market is projected to generate a market volume of USD 128.07 million by 2027.
A number of solutions created during the pandemic have continued to stay in use post-pandemic. Several gym start-ups have appeared, targeting customers who prefer a more private setting during their gym routines. Some companies offer affordable individual gym pods rented by the hour and equipped with pre-recorded videos that customers can follow. Furthermore, 77% of Singaporeans said they plan on continuing virtual work-outs regardless of loosened safety regulations as this saves time and is much more convenient.
Rise in demand for boutique studios that offer personalised training based on convenience and intimacy
Boutique studios are considered to be small gyms that offer small specialised, personalised group classes. Sessions offered by these places are often popular for their atmosphere and the small number of people per class, resulting in a stronger bond between instructors and participants as well as between themselves, which also provides a much more comfortable class environment.
Valued at USD 49.30 billion in 2021, the global boutique fitness studio market’s biggest market shareholder is North America, followed by Europe. However, the Asia Pacific region is expected to experience the fastest growth rate in the coming years.
Mental health awareness paves way for holistic fitness
Gyms have also started to offer more personalised and flexible membership options that suit different lifestyles and are more cost-efficient. Along with physical fitness, holistic fitness is also becoming a popular approach.
Holistic fitness aims for fitness through mental and physical avenues. Fitness centres and gyms have started to equip themselves with facilities for more targeted classes such as yoga, post-natal fitness, personal trainers, group instructors, physiotherapists, chiropractors and nutritionists. Additionally, some establishments are solely set up for holistic fitness.
