Overview
Transportation and Storage industry a key contributor to the country’s GDP
The Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) of Singapore recognizes the transport and storage industry to be a key facilitator of the economy, as it creates an important link between suppliers, manufacturers, retailers and consumers. The Transportation and Storage industry contributed to 6.1% of GDP in 2021, and employed a 253,500 person workforce in 2020.
The industry consists of clusters that contribute to the industry, such as Water Transport (72.1%), Air Transport (13.1%), Other Transport (7.1%), Land Transport (4.4.%), Warehouse and Storage (1.7%), and Postal and Courier (1.6%). The ‘Other Transport’ segment consists of its support activities and cargo handling. Further, the industry does not consist of self-employed workers such as taxi drivers and people operating private hire vehicles.
Singapore boasts of being among the most technologically advanced warehousing markets across the globe. It consists of an approximate warehouse space of 117 million square feet, and is in the development of multi-story warehouses that provide cost-effective solutions as well.
Industry benefits from Singapore’s geographical advantage
The success of the transportation and storage industry lies in multiple factors. For instance, Singapore operates as a global connectivity hub, with an airport that operates flights to 380 cities in 90 countries. Further, it has sea routes connecting 600 seaports in 123 countries, as it is geographically located at the core of the main shipping routes.
Moreover, Singapore shows exemplary strength in levels of logistics professionalism, through its ability to provide a global network of logistics services pertaining to medicine, cold-chain and express delivery. This is mainly enabled through the contribution of third-party globally renowned logistics companies, which base their regional headquarters in Singapore.
Further, the country is known to have a permissive and efficient environment towards goods and service-based businesses, ranking first in the International Logistics Performance Index (LPI) global ranking. The industry for transport and storage is complementarily fueled by the thriving manufacturing and service industries of the country. This is primarily due to the heavy reliance the manufacturing and services industries place on logistics for their operations.
Key Trends
COVID-19 causes industry to intensify focus on creating buoyant supply chains
The transportation & storage industry contracted by a YoY rate of 8.1% in 1Q 2020. This was primarily caused by the weak performance of the air transport and land transport segments, due to restrictions in travel to curb the spread of COVID-19.
Meanwhile, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) assured resilience in the shipping industry, as its competence in transporting food, medical supplies and energy across the globe will play a crucial role in defeating the pandemic.
The pandemic has caused many companies to decentralize their supply chains, by geographically expanding their operations to minimize the risk of concentration. Singapore is regarded as both a regional and global dissemination point, due to its comprehensive business channels, as well as seaport and air integration. Therefore, Singapore is well equipped to serve the logistical and storage needs of businesses.
Further, COVID-19 has shifted the focus of concentrating merely on achieving cost and process efficiencies by means of a lean supply chain. The objective the industry aims to achieve is to reduce interruptions to supply chains due to unanticipated incidents such as travel restrictions and the pandemic, by building resilient supply chains.
5G infrastructure to revamp cross-border digital e-commerce
The primary initiative of the industry is towards the establishment of its digital infrastructure, with the strengthening of digital connectivity, rapid business innovation, payment systems and data analytics being the core focus. There are also measures being taken to rapidly grow the availability of 5G by 2025. Higher network bandwidth 5G enables better management of e-commerce orders, by making the online business environment more efficient, reducing transaction costs and accelerating the collection of data.
To encapsulate this motive, the Digital Economy Partnership Agreement (DEPA) with Chile and New Zealand was enforced in 2021. This enabled the development of a global scheme to aid businesses involved in transborder digital trade and electronic commerce. The development of e-commerce will have positive effects on the role it executes in warehousing spacing as well.
Logistics Industry Transformation Map establishes strategies to elevate and grow the industry through innovation
The government is financing modern solutions such as the ‘Locker Alliance’, a contemporary policy that initiates last-mile deliveries while providing higher coverage to its users. It will provide consumers with a broader range of parcel pick-up alternatives and improved delivery.
Moreover, the computerisation of supply chains and ingenious cloud-based market platforms for freight transport services are some of the policies the Singapore authorities are advocating to encourage innovation in the logistics industry. Such cutting-edge policies are likely to help industry players achieve lower costs through technology such as ‘virtual freight forwarding’, robotics and automation. Further, it will curb any incompetence present within the industry, such as high transportation costs and human inefficiency, by having mechanised systems that will reduce human error and costs, over time.
The adoption of such state-of-the-art technology is required in the industry to meet dynamic business processes and operations. This has resulted in the need to have a workforce that is competent to keep pace with the innovation and transformation occurring in the industry. It is essential for the workforce to be familiar with best practices used in the industry and thereby stimulate transformational growth by adopting the new technology.
