The pandemic resulted in a large number of jobs and industries being affected, and many having to make significant changes in order to overcome the hurdles that came along with it. A vast amount of time was spent on ensuring that all safety and security measures were followed whilst working through the crippling wave of obstacles that hit the economy. The industry found itself in high demand due to the assistance needed with securing physical premises, maintaining public safety, enforcing COVID-19 measures, and helping companies/governments/hospitals and other sectors with the containment of the pandemic.
The security and investigation sector had to adapt immensely in order to assist with the changes taking place. Enforcement of regulations to mitigate the spread of the virus resulted in a large number of security personnel taking up work throughout the city. Security agencies were quick to educate and train officers on government safety regulations, social distancing protocols, handling mass crowds, and staggering shifts in order to ensure that their own safety and health were maintained. As the demand for security personnel increased, security agencies began offering part-time job opportunities in order to accommodate the shortage in manpower.
In the aftermath of the pandemic, many individuals found themselves without a job and this resulted in people looking for job opportunities through a variety of fields other than their own. As a result, the security sector experienced a range of newcomers joining in, which brought forth a wave of inexperience and lack of training. Security agencies had no choice but to invest time and money into training and educating extra security personnel who were new to the field, and this had to be done within a short period of time. Timing was crucial as the industry needed to immediately fill a large gap that had formed due to the rising demand for security services, both physically and technologically.

The increase in pressure to cater to the country’s requirements during the COVID-19 outbreak did not paralyze the security industry; instead, we found the entire industry working together as a united force. The higher authorities ensured that workers were provided with:
- Enough personal protective gear to meet the increasing number of security personnel being deployed
- Extra uniforms in order to aid workers with clean attire and reduce laundry time
- Extra engagement and communications for ground officers being deployed in the areas that were severely hit due to the pandemic
Additional support from the Association of Certified Security Agencies (ACSA), Security Association Singapore (SAS) and Security Systems Association of Singapore (SSAS) was also given to the community within the security and investigation sector.
SSAS, which provided electronic security through products and services, was an active member within the sector. It provided relevant technologies to security personnel and agencies, and these equipment became instrumental in the efficient carrying out of duties whilst adhering to safety protocols. Some of these technologies were:
- Thermal detectors and scanners that could be used on larger crowds to identify civilians with elevated temperature levels
- Visitor management systems to store and access data from the cloud
- Touchless biometric systems
- Enhanced artificial intelligence capabilities to detect social distancing and crowd monitoring

Efficient use of resources; security measures being upgraded and re-modelled
The rapid spread of COVID-19 and the obstacles it brought along were a few of the reasons why the security and investigation industry required more long-term preparation. In anticipation of the future, the Security Industry Institute (SII) is focused on filling the knowledge gap and is developing a means to improve skill sets. Workers are being trained via webinars and online courses, while inexperienced recruits are being provided with the necessary resources to gradually adjust to the job requirements of security personnel.
SII prioritized the need for assistance with essential roles during the rapid spread of the COVID-19 virus and therefore was granted permission to conduct training sessions in person for 5 Security Workforce Skills Qualifications (WSQ) modules. Providing online lessons, the institute stated that in the following years, preference will be given to learning and fine-tuning skill sets as an added measure of improvement within the industry.
As a precautionary measure, the industry is increasing its recruitment of security personnel in order to address the dire need for a better prepared industry and hopes to also aid the economy of Singapore by providing job opportunities for its citizens.
