Overview
An established industry set to expand further, backed by elevated interest in beauty and personal care as well as social media
Comprising a wide range of services and products dedicated to skin care, hair care, nail care, spas, beauty salons etc., the beauty and wellness market in Singapore has been flourishing for many years with more than 18,000 businesses in the industry as of 2020.
With its last dip in revenue being in 2020 most likely due to the pandemic, the beauty and personal care product market swiftly recovered the following year with a market revenue value higher than any of the previous years. Year 2022 has seen the beauty and wellness sector generate a revenue of USD 1.13 billion, while the industry is expected to experience a growth rate of 2.94% annually going forward.
The rise of social media has also given way to beauty influencers and sale opportunities, with the beauty market being one of the first to grab hold of promotional benefits that the platform provided. According to a Harvard Business School study in 2019, 62% of women follow beauty influencers on social media.
While social influencers carried the bulk of the responsibility for promotions, everyday consumers can be credited too. Along with posting everyday life updates, the average social platform users also tend to mention products and services they are currently using or personally recommend.
Small local businesses are more likely to benefit from these types of free promotions. In fact, users took up 86% of YouTube’s top 200 beauty videos, not brands. A study by Google discovered that the number one source for beauty content was YouTube for women aged 18-54. Moreover, 67% of beauty shoppers discover new products through influencers.
Singapore’s position as a holiday hub secures tourism as a significant contributor to beauty and wellness market
Well known for being a prominent holiday destination in the Asia Pacific region, it comes as no surprise that the tourism sector in Singapore is a significant contributor to the beauty and wellness industry. While visiting Singapore, 21% of tourists spent the most money on beauty products as stated in an article published in 2021.
In addition to being a travel hotspot, Singapore also offers a range of products and services not only restricted to domestic brands or outlets but international businesses that might not be available to tourists in their respective countries.
Key Trends
Skincare sector experiences accelerated growth as healthy skin becomes a priority amongst consumers
In 2019, the demand for male grooming products in Singapore such as moisturiser and toner was on the rise and was expected to reach a market value of SGD 141 million by 2021. According to a global survey conducted in May 2020, regardless of the pandemic, 44% of Singaporeans participating in the survey said they spent the same amount of money on skincare products, pre and post-pandemic, while 22% of women said they spent more time and money on skincare because of the pandemic.
Valued at USD 290.7 million as of August 2022, the Singapore skincare market is on its way to expanding even more in the coming years with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.93%. The skincare market held the biggest segment in the beauty industry with 42% of the global market share in 2020.
Domestic market holds its own through innovation
The local beauty industry has been gradually developing through research and technological advances, with the help of well-funded institutions. Experts predict that these novel innovations might become Singapore’s signature in the global industry.
Moreover, several domestic companies have found success locally as well as overseas. Businesses and start-ups have proved their innovative drive by catering to consumers’ increased need for hygiene during the pandemic. Apps and digitalization of services have helped keep businesses running and even boosted sales in some cases.
Beauty industry receives government support to recover from pandemic
Like most markets, the Singapore beauty and wellness market was also affected by the global pandemic. Recognizing the impact on the industry, Singapore enterprises launched a new industry body called the Beauty Services Alliance (BSA) in 2019.
BSA initiated the Beauty Services Competency Framework in 2019, a new pathway system for career progression that covers 45 job roles in the industry. Its main goal is to increase jobs for Singaporeans in the industry by 30% come 2025. Despite the effects of COVID-19, the Singapore beauty and wellness market continues to grow by 10% per year.
Demand for K-beauty products on the rise amidst expansion of Hallyu Wave
One of the most popular global skincare trends in recent years has been the use of Korean skincare products, known for their innovation and targeted skincare solutions. Amidst the expansion of the Hallyu Wave, the popularisation of K-pop and K-drama has spilled over into the K-beauty industry with fans hoping to use the same products promoted or used by prominent Korean public figures. However, this does not affect K-beauty’s ever evolving innovation and research, which results in products with new effective ingredients that appeal to the masses.
K-beauty possesses a large following in Asia as its products are believed to be especially curated for Asian skin. As recorded by a survey conducted in April 2020, Singaporeans largely opted for Asian brands when it came to skincare. Furthermore, as per a survey conducted in July 2021, 36% of Singapore consumers said that the Korean beauty products they used accounted for 25-50% of the beauty products they own.
Additionally, in 2021, another trend that gained momentum, which proved advantageous to the K-beauty phenomenon, was the surging interest in ‘clean beauty’ - i.e. sustainable and ethical products that are natural or organic. This is a feature that the K-beauty sector can definitely pride itself on and further enhances its appeal.
