Overview
Industry remains popular despite high penetration rate across all key products
The consumer electronics industry includes electronic and digital devices used privately for entertainment (television sets, radios, smart speakers etc.), communication (telephones, smart phones etc.) or home-office activities (e.g. printers, copiers). Singapore’s consumer electronics revenue was around USD 2 billion in 2020, less than 1% of the APAC region’s consumer electronics revenue of USD 263 billion, where Indonesia is the largest market with around USD 21 billion in revenue in 2020.
Consumer electronics manufacturing is classified under the infocomms & consumer electronics segment, which is part of the electronics manufacturing cluster. The infocomms & consumer electronics segment includes the information & communications technology (ICT) and consumer electronics sub-segments. In 2021, the infocomms & consumer electronics segment accounted for around 4% of Singapore’s total output and represented approximately 9% of the output of the electronics cluster.
Smartphones, computers, TVs, audio devices, smart wearables and cameras are the key market segments of the consumer electronics industry. Singapore is an attractive market for smartphones and is a popular destination for launching new smartphone models for the Southeast Asian region. In 2019, the number of smartphone users in Singapore was estimated to reach approximately 5 million in 2020, with a penetration rate of around 88%. Singapore’s mobile phone penetration rate was around 159% in 2021, with around 11 million wireless broadband subscriptions. The city-state’s computer hardware market is also considered lucrative, accounting for around 37% of the total consumer electronics market in 2018.
In 2018, around 97% of the Singaporean households had a TV while around 81% of households had a personal computer. At the time, approximately 69% of households had a laptop, close to 48% had a tablet and around 32% had a desktop. In addition, approximately 29% of Singaporean households possessed a digital media player, while 34% owned a digital camera.
Consumer electronics is the second most popular category in Singapore’s e-commerce market, where the e-commerce sales revenue of consumer electronics was recorded at around USD 1 billion in 2021. The average revenue per user in the consumer electronics category of the e-commerce market was around USD 860 in 2021.
Key Trends
Consumer electronics industry remains resilient amidst the pandemic and work-from-home mandates
Despite the pandemic impacting the retail market, the retail sales of the consumer electronics industry remained robust with around 4% YoY growth in 2020. The trend reflected the global rise in demand for computing devices as a result of the work-from-home mandates during the lockdown periods.
As consumer electronics were already a popular category in e-commerce sales, the rapid growth in the e-commerce market during the pandemic further supported the demand for consumer electronics. In December 2020, around 36% of the consumer electronics sales were conducted online.
In terms of manufacturing, the infocomms and electronics output contracted by 6% YoY in 2020 to reach SGD 14 billion and remained constant in 2021, with less than 1% growth from the 2020 value.
Replacement demand and wearable technology expected to drive industry growth despite saturation
Although the consumer electronics market is saturated with almost all households in Singapore owning a TV, mobile phone and computing devices, they are also rapidly upgraded to newer technologies and the latest models. For instance, the smartphones in Singaporean households are replaced every 18 months on average.
Premiumisation of electronics such as smartphones, laptops and TVs will be the main growth driver, in addition to specialty items such as OLED television and imaging devices, since market penetration rates of consumer electronics in the country is already high. The TV segment has newer developments such as flexible screen technology, which is expected to drive demand in the industry.
Electronic wearables and wellness trackers are also growing market segments within the industry, in addition to ear-worn devices such as earbuds, used for making calls and listening to music, as they appeal to the health-conscious Singaporean population.
The wearables market growth is encouraged by the Singaporean government’s policy towards improving health and wellbeing. For Instance, the National Steps Challenge launched by the Health Promotion Board rewards participants who meet the target of 5,000-10,000 steps every day with redeemable points, which indirectly promotes the wearables that track daily steps.
Singapore’s research agency A*STAR (Agency for Science, Technology and Research) is also working on numerous wearable technologies such as an adhesive sensor patch that detects ‘micro-swelling’ on the surface of the skin near an IV needle, a 360-degree camera that can take panoramic shots, and a wireless headband that can detect and measure brain states such as attention, emotions, fatigue and anxiety.
The e-commerce revenue of the consumer electronics industry in Singapore is expected to grow at a CAGR of 10% from USD 1,860 million in 2022 to USD 2,500 million in 2025, with around 3 million users by 2025.
Key Statistics
- The infocomms & consumer electronics industry employed around 7,000 workers and paid SGD 525 million in revenue in 2021.
- The industry had around 73 establishments in 2020.
- E-commerce user penetration for the electronics industry is estimated at 33% in 2022 and is projected to reach 41% by 2025.
- More than 50% of respondents in a survey by Rakuten Insight in 2019 stated that they owned a smart wearable device.
